Atsuhiko Misawa

Atsuhiko Misawa (1961) is a sculptor. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts with a degree in Sculpture and received his master's degree from the same university.

Most of his sculptures are life-size representations of animals, which he carves in camphor wood and finishes with oils. His wooden animals have been a sensation in the world of wood carving. They are wonderfully detailed and all have their own unique personality. He started producing the series in 2000. There have been many exhibitions of his work since then, including, from 2007, the travelling exhibition Misawa Atsuhiko – ANIMALS which toured five public art museums in Japan.

Atsuhiko Misawa also produces paintings of animals. His depictions have a childlike appeal and are full of humour. He uses a range of techniques and materials to create animals that clearly have a zest for life. He has published several books of his work, the most recent of which is ANIMALS No. 3.
Miffy, Bear and Horned Owl
The title of his statue is Miffy, Bear and Horned Owl. β€˜It is impossible to improve on the shape of Miffy – she is perfect as she is. So I tried to create a setting that would not detract from the Miffy statue.’
