Inez van Lamsweerde (1963) and Vinoodh Matadin (1961) are both photographers. They met at the Art Academy in Amsterdam and have been working together for more than 25 years. In the early 1990s they became famous for their hyperrealist series, Thank You Thighmaster and Final Fantasy, in which they experimented with the latest digital image processing technology. Their work appeals to art critics, who are fascinated by the interaction of elegance and horrific elements in their photographs. Following the lead of the art world, the fashion world is also enchanted with the duo.
The couple now shoot campaigns for fashion houses such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Viktor & Rolf, Chloé and Miu Miu. They also produce photographs for the most prestigious and influential magazines and newspapers, such as Vogue and The New York Times. Their work has been added to museum collections all over the world and a retrospective exhibition of their work, Pretty Much Everything, was held at the FOAM Photography Museum Amsterdam in 2010.
Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, who have been living and working in New York since 1995, are among the few artists who successfully bridge the divide between fashion and art while continuing to keep a foot in both worlds.
Lara Barrymore as MiffyOf their Miffy statue, Lara Barrymore as Miffy, they say: ‘In our exhibitions we create composites of separate works that result in diptychs and triptychs. In this case a combination of Holland’s most famous model, Lara Stone, some of our favourite images from our floral still-life series and Drew Barrymore’s androgynous body resulted in a three-dimensional triptych.’
