Rik van Iersel





Rik van Iersel (1961) is a self-taught artist, painter, graphic designer and musician. He started designing posters for the Effenaar pop music venue in Eindhoven as an 18-year-old. He developed his own design signature, which continues to evolve. He works quickly and spontaneously and is endlessly curious about materials, media and life itself. Describing his fascination with the world around him, he says, ‘Nothing originates with me: everything comes from something or someone else.’ He expresses this fascination in his work, with people being his favourite subject. He never throws any of his creations away because they too are a source of the fascination and wonder that are part of his personality.

His first large colourful expressionist paintings quickly led to a solo exhibition at Galerie Willy Schoots in Eindhoven. From 1982 onwards he was exhibiting all over the world in cities such as Amsterdam, Berlin, Hamburg, New York and San Francisco. He produces an idiosyncratic catalogue for each of his exhibitions. He is a versatile artist: in addition to painting, he also draws comic strips, plays drums in several bands, including Der Junge Hund, and creates video and DVD presentations. In 1998 and 2004 he was a guest lecturer at the BTK University of Art and Design in Hamburg.

Together with the Dutch rock band, Stuurbaard Bakkebaard, in 2007 he set up Beukorkest: a project that combines the styles of avant-garde, hip-hop, trash, funk, Americana, spoken word and blues. The Beukorkest project initially focused on music, but with the establishment of the Buro Beukorkest Art Platform, there was an increasing shift towards theatre and the visual arts. As part of this project Buro Beukorkest develops special art initiatives at the Temporary Art Centre in Eindhoven.
Twinkle, twinkle, little star - six suns make my day
The title of Rik van Iersel’s Miffy statue is Twinkle, twinkle, little star - six suns make my day. ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is one of the oldest and most well-known lullabies worldwide. Wherever it is encountered, the nursery rhyme is always an icon of recognition and a symbol of positivism. The same can be said of Miffy. So to me it seemed very appropriate to combine the two. To celebrate 60 years of Miffy there is a sun for each decade. The icons fused into one in my statue are painted with colours borrowed from Picasso and Le Corbusier. It’s time to party!’
